Name: Anyssia Gibbs
School: Granite Hills
Last week’s accomplishment: Gibbs led the Cougars with 34 points, 11 rebounds, eight assists, and three blocks in a victory over the Saints on Jan. 23. She also had 33 points, 12 rebounds, eight steals and three blocks in a loss to Victor Valley on Jan. 25.
What do you like most about your sport: The amount of categories that you can be successful at in basketball virtually eliminates excuses. A player may not be the best scorer but maybe they can rebound or play solid defense so no matter what you can always be a contributor.
How long have you been playing your sport and how did you get started: I began playing basketball in second or third grade for my school. My dad would work with me on the outside hoops on the playgrounds and I developed a growing appreciation for it from that point on.
Pregame ritual: Before a game, I leave real life a little bit. I zone out and just talk to God as if he was standing right next to me. This mental escape, if you will, prepares my mind for the intensity that the game requires.
Most memorable sports moment: One of the girls in my league whom I’d never spoken to had a major problem with me and I don’t really know why. After a game I pulled her aside and just started talking to her and she saw that I’m nothing like how I’m labeled and that’s something I’m proud of.
If you could be someone else for a day, who would it be and why: I wouldn’t want to be anyone else ever because no one can be as good a me as I can and vice versa. I’d like to remain myself, thanks.
Something most people don’t know about you: I’d like to make known to everyone that I’m never “out of control.” I’m perfectly aware and in control of everything I say, do and the way I perform on the court. The idea that I’m anything but is absolutely absurd.
How would you spend $1 million: I’d divide it between my church my family and probably a few charities. I’d keep $100,000 for myself for a rainy day.
Where would you go if you could travel anywhere in the world: I’ve been wanting to go to Hawaii for some time now but it seems like that’s not going to happen so my next choice would be Italy.
If you had an extra hour every day, how would you spend it: I’d spend an extra hour a day doing homework. An extra hour would be quite useful.
What superpower do you wish you had: Super speed would be pretty great or the ability to levitate to increase my vertical.
Favorite class: I enjoy my psychology class, more so because of my teacher than the actual content. Shout out to Ms. Chaires.
Favorite sports team: Cleveland Cavaliers
Favorite athlete: LeBron James because he’s my best friend.
Favorite superhero: I’m my favorite superhero.
Favorite TV show: I love “Law and Order: SVU” and “The Good Doctor”
Favorite movie: The new “Jumanji” movie is pretty good.
Favorite song: My favorite songs are “Why” by Jonathan McReynolds or “Close” by Marvin Sapp.
Favorite meal: I rarely eat the same thing consistently, but I just like Italian food in general.
Favorite local restaurant: I absolutely love Pancho Villa’s
Favorite app: I like iMessage Games. My favorite is Word Hunt.
