Lionel Messi has been suspended for four games by FIFA for insulting an assistant referee, effective immediately.

Messi was caught on camera insulting one assistant referee in Friday’s 1-0 win over Chile, but he wasn’t disciplined during the game. On Tuesday, shocking news came out of the FIFA offices in Zurich when it was announced Messi is suspended for four of the team’s five remaining World Cup qualifiers, beginning with Tuesday’s game in Bolivia.

Here’s what to know.

FIFA’s involvement

According to Argentine paper Clarin, FIFA stepped in on Monday and were reviewing his actions ahead of Tuesday’s match, which didn’t go over well with the soccer governing body, who are certainly looking to set an example with this case.
