Around 1:20 a.m. early Tuesday morning, Fontana police officers observed a vehicle running a stop light at the intersection of Cherry and Baseline and attempted to do a traffic stop. But, the driver failed to stop and began weaving between lanes, leaving police to believe the driver was DUI.
Fontana police said in a release that a vehicle pursuit quickly began and as the suspect, 23 year-old Juan Juarez of Highland, approached the intersection of Cherry and Foothill he wound up crashing head on with another vehicle as he crossed the center median.
The initial crash caused several other vehicles to become involved in the collision. Juarez failed to escape as he tried to flee from his vehicle, and was taken into custody. The vehicle the suspect was driving ended up being an unreported stolen vehicle out of Highland.
Minor to severe injuries were suffered by several of the victims involved in the crash. They were treated on scene or at local hospitals.
The suspect was on a court order release by the San Bernardino Police Department for an arrest on March 2nd for stealing and possession of a stolen vehicle, burglary and resisting arrest at the time of this crime.
Authorities transported Juarez to ARMC and booked him into the jail ward of the hospital because of the injuries he received in the collision.
Juan Juarez was booked for felony DUI causing injury, felony evading, possession of a stolen vehicle and committing a crime while out on bail.
