According to officials it took about two hours Tuesday morning for San Bernardino County fire crews to rescue a man buried at a quarry in Lucerne Valley.
Eric Sherwin who is a spokesman for the San Bernardino County Fire department said about 6:15 a.m. the call came to respond to a plant on Meridian Road just south of Highway 18.
The San Bernardino Sun reports that Sherwin said, “(The) worker is buried mid-torso (and is awake and talking).”
According to a tweet from the the fire department, around 9 a.m. the man was freed from the hopper and was taken to an area hospital.
Fire officials said the rescue operation was an extended one due to the fact that crews had to first remove the material to prevent further collapse and burial before being able to safely remove the trapped man.
