The U.S. men’s national team will face one of the toughest tests in recent memory when it battles Copa America favorite Argentina in the semifinal on Tuesday night in Houston, Texas. With Lionel Messi, Javier Mascherano and others, the South Americans are expected to have little trouble to advance. But the same was thought way back in 1995. That’s when the Copa America was held in Uruguay, and the U.S. destroyed Argentina 3-0 in the group stage to win the group. Now, sure, Argentina rested some players but brought them on in the second half and still couldn’t do anything, setting up one of the most memorable results in the team’s history.
Now, with another chance, two former USA stars who were on that team look back and look ahead to tonight. John Harkes, current coach of new USL club FC Cincinatti, sat down with CBS Sports to recall that eventful, cool night in Paysandu, Uruguay. As did Alexi Lalas, who is working with Delta Air Lines, official airline partner of Copa America, to set up an event at the fan plaza ahead of Sunday’s final to meet fans.
